i'm posing the question 'is steven gerrard too influential?' to the success of liverpool fc

stevie G, like him or loathe him, he is undoubtedly a fantastic footballer

the reaction of the everton fans when he limped off the pitch last night is acknowledgement of this

what sets him apart from the likes of lampard, is his ability to lead a team, he has proved many a time that he possesses this skill

this is great, but the other players are too dependent on his direction and talent, instead of concentrating on their own contribution to the team

this was evident last night when he limped off, the group dynamics totally changed and it affected the players.  did anyone else notice how instantly disheartened torres looked? it affected his game, to the point he'd have made a bigger contribution from the bench!

the rest of the team lacked any structure without Gerrard's influence, they played like a bunch of headless chickens with no direction; except the excellent defence, marshalled by the ever reliable carragher

the point is liverpool have proved previously they are capable of winning without Gerrard, so therefore the talent is there, if not in sufficient quantity.  However with the onus placed on the brilliance of Gerrard, the other players revere him at the expense of having faith in their own talent and contribution to the team.  This inturn is deskilling them to the point they do not demonstrate their own footballing capabilities.

i've given myself headache with that waffle!!
yes i do love Steven Gerrard as a footballer and want him to stay as liverpool captain, just incase anyone questions this
